In him [the Word/Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4)

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

June is a wonderful time of the year. Maybe it’s because it’s the time when we have the most daylight. Light tends to make my mood brighter. My thoughts turn to Jesus, the light of the world who shines brightly not just in June but all the time.

Jesus is the light. He comes to remove the darkness of sin in our lives and in the world. Jesus’ light provides warmth to our souls and guides us along the right paths. He illuminates the things that would cause us to stumble and fall and helps us to see the clear way. In his light we see what’s wrong and are moved to change it. Jesus is the light of the world!

Jesus also tells us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

We are invited into the light of Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are to embody the light of Christ, shining light into the darkness we find in the world. Like the city on a hill referenced in Matthew 5, we are here to be a light, shining with the very generosity of our lives. We are called to embody a spirit of light and to live a life of good works for God’s Kingdom. As bearers of the light of Christ, living and engaging in our communities, our minds and hearts are illuminated and we, along with our communities, are transformed.

Let us live in the light and let Christ’s light shine through every day.

In Christ’s light,

Pastor Anne
